United Nation’s Watchdog Chief Is In Ukraine

The director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Mariano Grossi,  is in Ukraine for an urgent meeting with the government of Ukraine regarding the safety matter of nuclear facilities within Ukraine.

Grossi also posted his picture infront of the official UN vehicle on his Twitter account with a caption that he is now in Ukraine and will start the IAEA’S mission to ensure the security and safety of country nuclear facilities.

The IAEA said in a statement that Grossi is in Ukraine to provide security and safety support to  Ukraine’s nuclear facilities.

The goal of this Grossi’s mission is to provide urgent technical assistance help to minimize the risk for people and the environment.

Russian forces have occupied Ukraine’s largest nuclear power plant, Zaporizhzhia, since March 4, and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant — site of the infamous 1986 accident — since Feb. 24. 

The visit of Grossi occurs because of Ukraine’s request for the assistance of security and safety.

“We can’t afford to lose any more time,” he said, adding that the expertise of IAEA is urgently needed to prevent any nuclear accident.
